Her world will change forever. Rose Hathaway, Shadow-kissed guardian to Vasilisa Dragomir, is getting more than she’d bargained for. Lissa (Vasilisa) is a moroi—a full fledged vampire with an unusual power called spirit. Rose is a dhampir—a half human, half vampire. Ever since she was born, she’s been training to be a guardian—specifically her best friend, Lissa’s, guardian. When they were younger, Rose died in a car crash. Lissa was the only one who had survived—losing her family, and Rose. At least that’s what she’d first thought… Lissa’s spirit kicked in as she’d lain crying over Rose’s dead body, and without realizing it, she’d brought Rose back to the land of the living. This brought about Rose’s shadow-kissed (coming back from the dead) nature, linking her to Lissa forever, and letting Rose access Lissa’s feelings and mind through their connection.

Yet, this year Rose is experiencing even stranger occurrences. She’s seeing the ghost of a friend she’d lost months before, to a strigoi attack. The Strigoi are a species of vampires that have died and lost their souls. One cannot just become a vampire, but violent, twisted, unmerciful strigois are created everyday. This ghost is trying to warn her about something, and yet she can’t seem to figure what exactly that might be.

Rose and many other dhampirs are training at the academy to become selfless guardians to the sacred moroi, the hunted prey of the strigoi. Yet this year, Rose’s last year in the academy, everything is flying out of proportion. The wards around the academy are being messed with, weakening their shield against the undead, her relationship with her instructor Dimitri is becoming even more complex, and Rose is undergoing many different tests, all linking to her future as a guardian. There is no end to the chaos as the school is later attacked, resulting in many horrible losses, and changes that will alter Rose’s dangerous existence forever. Now Rose Hathaway must choose between the two she loves most in this world, and take the risks that both decisions encompass; the struggle for survival, and the fate of a broken heart.

This stunning novel is the third of Richelle Mead’s glorious Vampire Academy series. Mead’s use of suspense and mystery makes Shadow Kiss and the other books in this magnificent series the definition of perfection. Mead knows how to hook her readers, and keep them flipping pages. There are no boring bits to this book, and you will find yourself feeling everything Rose feels, experiencing the struggle right along with her. I strongly recommend this series to everyone, and to avoid spoilers, read the series in order from the first book The Vampire Academy, to the second Frostbite, and finally to the third Shadow Kiss.
